This work addresses, from the reflection of the belgian dominican theologian Edward
Schillebeeckx, two relevant and current themes in Christian theology: the question of
Christian identity and the "problem" of religious plurality. It is proposed to show that the
principle of openness to cultures and religions is constitutive of Christian identity, that is, it is
based on faith and not in spite of it. Cultural and religious diversity must be recognized and
respected from the Christian point of view. However, pluralism is not the fundamental reason
for welcoming others. Rather, Jesus Christ himself welcomed all without distinction, without
prejudice, for he did not live for himself but for the sake of the Reign of God, rooted in justice
and care for the poor and marginalized. Moreover, if Jesus Christ himself as the full and
definitive revelation of God is a decentralized reality, then Christianity, which wants to be
constituted as his historical body, must take the same principle as a reference. In other words,
Christianity must be decentralized from the alleged exclusivity and self-referentiality that
accompanied it for many years in order to open itself to the practice of the Kingdom of God.
This demands an attitude of welcome and openness. It must be borne in mind that the God of
Jesus is a symbol of openness rather than closure. The historical contingency of Jesus of
Nazareth as a limited manifestation of God's fullness does not exhaust his greatness but puts
him in special relationship to the recognition and acceptance of divine values present in the
world’s religions. Thus, pluralism is not an evil to be abolished; pluralism can offer a way for
religion to serve as a tool to overcome petty strife and open conflicts that, all too often, are
justified in terms of religious identity. It is a work, therefore, that gathers in Edward
Schillebeeckx's thinking the reasons why Christianity can and should be optimistic with other
religions without giving up its own identity and which, in the context of cultural and religious
plurality, calls on Christianity to update your message in the world.
O trabalho aborda, a partir da reflexão do teólogo dominicano belga Edward Schillebeeckx,
dois temas relevantes e atuais à teologia cristã: a questão da identidade cristã e o “problema”
da pluralidade religiosa. Quer mostrar que o princípio de abertura para as culturas e as
religiões é constitutivo da identidade cristã, ou seja, é feito a partir da fé e não apesar dela. E,
embora se deva reconhecer e respeitar a diversidade cultural e religiosa, do ponto de vista
cristão, não é o pluralismo em si mesmo, ou pluralismo de fato, a forma possível de acolher os
outros, mas o próprio Jesus Cristo que não viveu em função dele mesmo, mas em função do
Reino de Deus. Ele é a ação salvadora de Deus no mundo dos homens e tem como uma de
suas características essenciais a justiça aos pobres e marginalizados. Se o próprio Jesus Cristo,
enquanto revelação plena e definitiva de Deus, é uma realidade descentrada, o cristianismo
que é seu corpo histórico deve tomar como referência o mesmo princípio. O cristianismo deve
se libertar das pretensões de exclusividade e autoreferencialidade que o acompanharam
durante muitos anos da história e foram motivo para grandes atrocidades a fim de abrir-se à
prática do Reino de Deus que reclama atitudes de acolhimento, otimismo e abertura ao mundo
e, nele, às religiões. Deve-se ter em conta para isso que o Deus que Jesus revela é símbolo de
abertura e não de fechamento e que a contingência histórica de Jesus de Nazaré, enquanto
caráter limitado da manifestação de Deus, não esgota a grandiosidade divina, mas o coloca em
relação com as demais religiões a partir do reconhecimento e acolhimento aos valores divinos
presentes nas outras expressões religiosas. Sendo assim, poder-se-á reconhecer que o
pluralismo não é um mal a ser abolido, pois encontram em Deus sua razão de ser. As
mesquinhas contendas e as guerras de religião em nome de Deus, isto sim, são um mal a ser
abolido. É um trabalho, portanto, que recolhe no pensamento de Edward Schillebeeckx as
razões pelas quais o cristianismo pode e deve ser otimista com as demais religiões sem
prescindir da sua própria identidade e que, no contexto da pluralidade cultural e religiosa,
convoca o cristianismo a atualizar sua mensagem no mundo.
