| pt |
| dc.description.abstract | This dissertation critically examines the epistemology of Michael Polanyi, focusing on the distinction he establishes between the objectivism of logical positivism and the notion of objectivity rooted in personal knowledge. The research begins with the observation that modern epistemology has privileged models of knowledge based on neutrality, logical formalization, and impersonal empirical observation. The work reconstructs Polanyi’s critique of such conceptions, arguing that cognitive activity necessarily involves tacit elements, integrative skills, and personal commitments that cannot be reduced to formal propositions. The dissertation is organized around three main axes. The first provides an analysis of the philosophical and scientific context that informs Polanyi’s critique of logical empiricism, particularly his rejection of the verification principle as a foundation for knowledge. The second axis presents Polanyi’s positive epistemological proposal, emphasizing concepts such as tacit knowledge, subsidiary and focal awareness, indwelling, and commitment. These are explored in their integrative function and dynamic structure, highlighting the impossibility of fully explicating the processes underlying knowing. The third axis articulates Polanyi’s epistemology with an ontological perspective, arguing that his theory of knowledge implies a stratified conception of reality, in which higher levels cannot be reduced to the laws governing lower ones. In addition to a systematic and exegetical analysis of Polanyi’s major works, the dissertation engages with contemporary discussions on belief and justification, incorporating contributions from authors such as Aaron Zimmerman and Robert Innis. It thereby situates Polanyi’s epistemology within broader debates on the limitations of methodological rationalism and the need to rethink the conditions for human knowledge. The dissertation concludes that Polanyi’s epistemology offers an alternative to traditional conceptions of objectivity, by emphasizing the tacit, participatory, and normative dimensions of knowing. This approach redefines the criteria for epistemic justification and provides significant insights for the development of a theory of knowledge attentive to the historicity, embodiment, and symbolic mediation inherent in cognitive practice. | en_US |
