The increase in the life expectancy of the human being results in the greater possibility
of coexistence among the generations of a family. The changes that have been taking
place in the structure and dynamics of this system make up a context in which
grandparents have assumed increasingly important roles in family relationships.
Increasingly these relationships have been established through cyberspace which is
considered as a virtual universe formed by information that circulates and / or is stored
on all computers connected in network, especially the World Wide Web. This
qualitative research aimed to investigate how the New Information and Communication
Technologies (NICTs) affect the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren.
Specifically, we investigated the relationship that the elderly have established with
NICTs, as grandparents and grandchildren perceive and evaluate the relationship
established between them through the virtual world, as well as the meanings attributed
to what is to be grandfather / grandmother and grandchild / granddaughter in this
technological context. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 12
elderly grandmothers and 12 adult grandchildren of both sexes. The interviews were
recorded, transcribed and then analyzed according to the content analysis method. The
findings showed that most of the grandparents interviewed pointed out as benefits the
speed and immediacy with which they communicate with their grandchildren through
technology, indicating a sense of belonging to the family and the age group of the
grandchildren. It was verified that great part of the grandparents had the initial contact
with the NICTs through grandchildren and / or relatives. The findings also indicated
that the interest in NICTs seems to be fundamentally of a social and family character,
being related to the improvement of the quality of life. The results also pointed out the
difficulties of the elderly in the use of technological tools. Among them we can mention
the writing /typing, as well as the understanding of the functionality of the mobile apps.
One fact that caught our attention in the interviews, both grandparents and
grandchildren, was the report of physical problems caused by the excessive use of
technology such as sight and tendinitis and /or muscle pain. The grandparents added
that the affection, affinity and love between them and their grandchildren are feelings
that are strengthened through the internet. In turn, most of the grandchildren interviewed
revealed that the use of technology was directed towards the objective of functionality
and practicality for communication, but it was quite evident the pleasure of being
connected and relating to their grandparents. It is concluded that communication
technologies have taken an important place in this relationship because they aren`t only
used to shorten distances, communication technologies are also promoters of health and
well-being, enabling the strengthening of affective bonds and the relations of care
between the generations.
Com o aumento da expectativa de vida do ser humano tem-se como consequência a
maior possibilidade de convivência entre as gerações de uma família. As mudanças que
vêm ocorrendo na estrutura e na dinâmica desse sistema compõem o cenário em que os
avós têm assumido papéis de importância crescente nos relacionamentos familiares.
Cada vez mais essas relações têm sido estabelecidas através do ciberespaço que é
considerado como um universo virtual formado pelas informações que circulam e/ou
estão armazenadas em todos os computadores ligados em rede, especialmente a internet.
A presente pesquisa, de natureza qualitativa, teve como objetivo geral investigar como
as Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação (TIC´s) afetam o relacionamento entre
avós e netos. Especificamente, investigou-se a relação que o idoso tem estabelecido com
as TIC´s; de que forma as TIC´s repercutem no envelhecimento; como avós e netos
percebem e avaliam a relação estabelecida entre eles através do mundo virtual, bem
como os sentidos atribuídos ao que é ser avô/avó e neto/neta nesse contexto
tecnológico. Os dados coletados resultaram de entrevistas semidirigidas realizadas com
12 avós idosos e 12 netos adultos, de ambos os sexos. As entrevistas foram gravadas,
transcritas e, em seguida, analisadas de acordo com a técnica de análise de conteúdo
proposta por Minayo. Os dados analisados evidenciaram que: 1) a maioria dos avós
entrevistados apontou como benefícios a rapidez e o imediatismo com que se
comunicam com seus netos através da tecnologia, indicando sentimento de
pertencimento à família e ao grupo etário dos netos; 2) grande parte dos avós teve o
contato inicial com as TIC´s por meio de netos e/ou familiares; 3) o interesse pelas
TIC´s parece ser fundamentalmente de caráter social e familiar, estando relacionado
com a melhoria da qualidade de vida; 4) as dificuldades dos idosos frente ao uso das
ferramentas tecnológicas se relacionam com a escrita/digitação, assim como o
entendimento da funcionalidade dos aplicativos. Um dado que chamou a atenção nas
entrevistas, tanto dos avós quanto dos netos, foi o relato de problemas físicos
ocasionados pelo uso excessivo da tecnologia como os de visão e tendinite e/ou dores
musculares. Os avós acrescentaram que a afetividade, a afinidade e o amor entre eles e
os seus netos são sentimentos que se fortalecem através da internet. Por sua vez, a
maioria dos netos entrevistados revelou que: 1) o uso da tecnologia direcionava-se para
o objetivo da funcionalidade e da praticidade para a comunicação; 2) muitos deles
ensinaram os avós a lidar com as tecnologias e sentem prazer em estar conectados e se
relacionando com seus avós. Conclui-se que as tecnologias de comunicação assumiram
um espaço importante nessa relação. Elas não são utilizadas apenas para encurtar as
distâncias; são também promotoras de saúde e bem estar possibilitando o fortalecimento
de vínculos afetivos e as relações de cuidado entre as gerações.
