The participation of women in historical processes is a topic that has gained
prominence in recent decades. Traditionally relegated to secondary roles and
predominantly interpreted through a male perspective, women in Christian religions,
especially after the Christianization of the West, were often considered unfit for direct
access to God, leadership positions, and in some cases, were even excluded from
historical records. Focusing specifically on The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints, known as the "Mormon" church, a denomination that arrived in the Southern
Brazil in the third decade of the 20th century, this research identified a little-recognized
female figure in the denomination's history, Auguste Kulmann Lippelt, directing my
attention not only to her but to other relevant women of this initial period of The Church
of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The dissertation aims to analyze the living
conditions of women between 1913 and 1935 within the researched religious institution
during the period of its arrival in Brazil, through sources such as newspapers,
institutional records, letters, photographs, and interviews. The analysis seeks to
understand how the actions of these women influenced the implementation of this
religious institution in the Brazilian context. By presenting an analysis of the social
mechanisms of the time, we use Bourdieu to identify male dominance, and Scott to
understand gender dynamics, specifically concerning the binary relationship between
men and women. The research highlights how these factors shaped the relevance
given to these women in this society. Finally, it emphasizes the marginalization and
historical neglect of women in religious narratives, as noted by Perrot in her book
"Women or the Silences in History." Thus, this work serves as an accessible historical
record for those interested in deepening their understanding of the women who played
significant roles in establishing their religious institution in their communities.
A participação das mulheres nos processos históricos é um tema que tem ganhado
destaque nas últimas décadas. Tradicionalmente relegadas a papéis secundários e
interpretadas predominantemente sob uma perspectiva masculina, as mulheres nas
religiões cristãs, especialmente após a cristianização do ocidente, foram
frequentemente consideradas inadequadas para o acesso direto a Deus, posições de
liderança e, em alguns casos, foram até mesmo excluídas de registros históricos.
Focando especificamente na Igreja de Jesus Cristo dos Santos dos Últimos Dias,
conhecida como igreja dos “mórmons”, denominação que chegou ao Sul do Brasil na
terceira década do Século XX, esta pesquisa identificou uma figura feminina pouco
reconhecida na história da denominação, Auguste Kulmann Lippelt, direcionando
minha atenção não apenas a ela, mas a outras figuras femininas relevantes desse
período inicial de a Igreja de Jesus Cristo dos Santos dos Últimos Dias. A dissertação
tem como objetivo analisar as condições de vida das mulheres entre 1913 e 1935
dentro da instituição religiosa pesquisada, durante o período de sua chegada no
Brasil, por meio de fontes como jornais, registros institucionais, cartas, fotografias e
entrevistas. A análise visa compreender como as ações dessas mulheres
influenciaram a implementação dessa instituição religiosa no contexto brasileiro. Ao
apresentar uma análise dos mecanismos sociais da época, usamos Bourdieu, para
identificar a dominação masculina, e Scott, para entender a dinâmica de gênero,
especificamente quando ela fala da relação binária entre homens e mulheres. A
pesquisa destaca como esses fatores moldaram a relevância dada a essas mulheres
nessa sociedade. Finalmente, destaca-se também a marginalização e negligência
histórica em relação às mulheres nas narrativas religiosas, conforme observado por
Perrot em seu livro “As mulheres ou os silêncios na história”. Assim, este trabalho se
configura como um registro histórico acessível para aqueles interessados em
aprofundar seu entendimento sobre as mulheres que desempenharam papéis
significativos no estabelecimento de sua instituição religiosa em suas comunidades.
