| pt |
| dc.description.abstract | Research on joint attention, gestures and second language acquisition (SLA) in a bilingual preschool education setting promotes dialog between psychology, psycholinguistics, multimodality and applied linguistics, fostering the interrelation and the enrichment of the respective fields of knowledge. Therefore, we propose, with this thesis, to investigate the speech-gesture relation in the English language usage in bilingual linguistic trajectories from joint attention episodes between teachers and children in a preschool education setting. Research is based on studies related to joint attention by Tomasello (1988; 1995; 1999; 2009); Carpenter (1995; 2000; 2009); Carpenter, Nagel e Tomasello (1998); Bruner (1974; 1983); and Costa-Filho (2011; 2016; 2017; 2021); on the multimodal language perspective, in which speech-gesture production integrates within a single meaning array, as advocated by Kendon (2000; 2004; 2011; 2017); McNeill (1992; 1985; 2005; 2006; 2011; 2016); Goldin-Meadow (2009); Fonte (2011; 2014); and on studies about SLA developed by Gullberg (1993; 2006; 2011; 2012); Stam (1998; 2010; 2014); Moraes (2018); amongst others; as well as on scientific works on bilingualism by Grosjean (1982; 1984; 1999; 2010; 2013; 2022). Research methods were supported by a longitudinal case study based on qualitative approach, whose sample comprised the participation of four (4) children from 1 to 5 years old. Data were collected through video recordings made with a cellphone. The research comprised the analysis of the video recordings, made during instructional pedagogical activities, illustrating interactions of children with the teachers and teacher assistants and with other children in bilingual joint attention episodes. Video transcriptions were supported by the software tool ELAN (Eudico Linguistic Annotator). Transcription and analysis criteria were also considered in the light of the multimodal language perspective. Our findings revealed that joint attention episodes support multimodal second language acquisition, with improvement of linguistic productions in the English language, in interactive joint attention circumstances. Results will serve as indicators of the multimodal language processing, revealing the importance of joint attention consolidation and gestures in the trajectory of the English as a Second Language (ESL) acquisition and development in a bilingual preschool education setting. The scientific contribution of the study lays its foundation in the findings related to the evidence of the relevance that bilingual joint attention and multimodality offer to SLA in a preschool education setting. The social contribution of the study, in turn, will be established from the awareness and continuing ducation of teachers, who will take on a new look on the theme, substantiating their practice, which will benefit students, facilitating multimodal privileged access ways to the English language acquisition. | en_US |
