Esta tesis doctoral busca sistematizar datos sobre la trayectoria histórica de la
asociación de laicos católicos denominada “Legión de María”, en el municipio de
João Pessoa, capital del estado de Paraíba. En este sentido, las propuestas del
Concilio Vaticano II impulsaron las transformaciones que se produjeron en la Iglesia
Católica, lo que influyó en el clero y los laicos. La misión de los grupos legionarios
está constituida por oraciones y visitas domiciliarias, con especial atención a los
segmentos sociales de personas mayores y enfermos. Se trata de una misión
relevante en una sociedad secularizada, porque el apostolado genera cualidades
favorables al desarrollo de la autonomía del laicado, valorando la oración compartida
y la escucha fraternal. Este estudio tiene como objetivo presentar, de manera crítica,
los enfoques teóricos y documentales que sustentan, en el ámbito de las Ciencias de
la Religión, el análisis de los grupos de laicos que ingresan a la Legión de María.
Para ello utilizamos el concepto de habitus de Pierre Bourdieu. La investigación
reveló que la forma en que los laicos actúan en una asociación religiosa proporciona
la construcción de su fe en las parroquias y la sociedad. Este entendimiento permitió
rescatar la información histórica sobre la operacionalización de lo sagrado en la
estructura sociocultural del laicado católico, destacando la participación de los
legionarios mediante el uso de invocaciones a la Madre de Jesús, bajo el título
genérico de Nuestra Señora. En la preparación de la investigación y redacción de
esta tesis, dimos los siguientes pasos: en una primera etapa, realizamos la lectura
de autores esenciales en el campo y la encuesta numérica con la respectiva
clasificación de los praesidia en el municipio de João Pessoa. En una segunda
etapa, se analizó este conjunto de datos con el fin de verificar la preferencia de la
nomenclatura de los grupos legionarios en relación a los dogmas marianos. En el
desarrollo del texto, se llevó a cabo una búsqueda en la historia legionaria para
elaborar una reflexión sobre la presencia de esta asociación en el laicado católico,
realizando un resumen de su trayectoria. Nuestras reflexiones finales defienden que
la Legión de María desarrolla un papel importante en la persistencia de la devoción
de mariana en el catolicismo, incluso frente a los desafíos del referente crítico a la
manera tradicional de su estilo de apostolado.
This doctoral thesis pursues to systematize data about the historical trajectory of the lay Catholics, entitled “Legion of Mary”, in the municipality of João Pessoa, the capital of the state of Paraíba. In this sense, the purposes of the Second Vatican Council promoted the transformations in the Catholic Church, what influenced the clergy and the lay people. The mission of the legionary groups is constituted by prayers and home visits, with special attention to the social segments of older individuals and sick people. This is a relevant mission in a secularized society, because the apostolate generates qualities favourable to the development of laity’s autonomy, valuing the shared prayer and the fraternal listening. This study aims to present, critically, the theoretical and documental focus that base, in the scope of the Sciences Religion, the analysis of the lay groups that affiliate with the Legion of Mary. For this purpose, we used the concept of habitus by Pierre Bourdieu. The research revealed that the way how the laity acts in a religious association provides the construction of its belief in the parishes and society. This understanding made possible to rescue the historical information about the sacred in the social structure of the Catholic laity, highlighting the participation of the legionaries through the invocations to the Mother of Jesus, under the general title of Virgin Mary. In the elaboration of the research and the writing of this thesis, we took the following steps: in the first stage, we realized the reading of the theorists and the numerical survey with the respective classification of the praesidia in the municipality of João Pessoa. In the second stage, this set of data was analysed in order to verify the preference of the nomenclature of the legionary groups with relation to the Mary’s dogma. In the development of the text, we researched the legionary history to elaborate a reflection about the presence of this association in the Catholic laity, making a summary of its trajectory. Our conclusive reflections defend that the Legion of Mary develops an important role in the persistence of the Mary’s devotion in the Catholicism, even facing the challenges of the critical referent to the traditional manner of its style of apostolate.

Esta tese busca sistematizar os dados sobre a trajetória histórica da associação de
leigos católicos, denominada Legião de Maria, no município de João Pessoa, capital
do estado da Paraíba. Nesse sentido, as propostas do Concílio Vaticano II
impulsionaram as transformações que ocorreram na Igreja católica, influenciando o
clero e os leigos. A missão dos grupos legionários é construída por orações e visitas
domiciliares, destacando os segmentos sociais referentes aos indivíduos idosos e às
pessoas doentes. Trata-se de uma missão relevante dentro de uma sociedade
secularizada, pois o apostolado gera qualidades favoráveis ao desenvolvimento da
autonomia do laicato, valorizando a oração partilhada e a escuta fraterna. Este
trabalho tem por objetivo apresentar, de forma crítica, os enfoques teóricos e
documentais que alicerçam, no âmbito das Ciências da Religião, a análise dos
grupos de leigos que se filiam à Legião de Maria. Com essa finalidade, utilizou-se o
conceito de habitus de Pierre Bourdieu. A pesquisa revelou que a maneira como o
laicato age dentro de uma associação religiosa proporciona a construção de sua
crença nas paróquias e na sociedade. Esse entendimento tornou possível resgatar
as informações históricas sobre a operacionalização do sagrado na estrutura
sociocultural do laicato católico, destacando a participação dos legionários através
do uso que eles fazem das invocações à Mãe de Jesus, sob o título genérico de
Nossa Senhora. A elaboração da pesquisa e a redação desta tese deram os
seguintes passos: em uma primeira etapa, a leitura dos teóricos e o levantamento
numérico com a respectiva classificação dos praesidia existentes no município de
João Pessoa. Em um segundo momento, esse conjunto de dados foi analisado a fim
de verificar a preferência na nomenclatura dos grupos legionários com relação aos
dogmas marianos. No desenvolvimento do texto, buscou-se a história legionária
para elaborar uma reflexão sobre a presença dessa associação dentro do laicato
católico, fazendo um resumo do percurso de sua trajetória. As reflexões conclusivas
defendem que a Legião de Maria desempenha um papel importante na persistência
da devoção mariana no catolicismo, mesmo enfrentando os desafios das críticas
referentes à maneira tradicional do seu estilo de apostolado.
