(UNICAP, 2023-12-01) Ferreira, Ramon Demetrio Barbosa

Death has always been a theme widely used in literary texts. This has led to the emergence of several research projects using this theme. This doctoral thesis proposes a study of the laughter at death in the play ―Auto da Compadecida‖, by the Paraíba writer Ariano Suassuna. How such a heavy and complex subject can be laughed at in the play is the crux of the research. However, in order to reach this result, some other topics were covered, such as Christian eschatology, aesthetic modernity and the importance of Brazilian modernism in Ariano Suassuna's work. Going through these themes is also important for understanding the author's worldview and his thematic and stylistic choices. In this way, we can understand why laughter occurs at the most dramatic moment for human beings, i.e. at the moment of death.

“Mens sana in corpore sano”: uma hermenêutica paulina sobre saúde integral a partir de 1Tessalonissenses 5,23.
(Universidade Católica de Pernambuco, 2025-03-28) Ferro, Madson Machado de Medeiros; Correia Júnior, João Luiz; Silva, Drance Elias da; Chaves, José Afonso; Souza, José Roberto de
The urgent and growing need to promote the integral development of individuals is a crucial aspect of human well-being in an increasingly complex and challenging world. A misguided understanding of spirituality can lead to deep and lasting harm to one’s spiritual, emotional, and physical health. In many cases, distorted interpretations of spirituality may foster behaviors that neglect the basic needs of the human being or even provoke feelings of guilt or inadequacy. This study focuses on the analysis of the phrase “mens sana in corpore sano” through a Pauline hermeneutic of holistic health, based on 1 Thessalonians 5:23. The biblical text is explored as a unique opportunity to articulate a religious perspective on health that not only complements but also challenges secular paradigms, reaffirming the relevance of faith to practical life matters. A brief historical analysis of dualism—originating in Greek philosophy, which separates body and mind or soul—is presented, highlighting its influence on the religious and philosophical traditions of western christianity. By engaging with the academic field of Religious Studies, the work pursues an ethically and morally grounded vision of “mens sana in corpore sano”. Throughout this study, the importance of holistic health is emphasized—not merely as physical well-being, but as a state of balance among spiritual, emotional, and bodily dimensions. Within this perspective, spirituality cannot be dissociated from concrete human experience, as it influences our emotions, relationships, and even our physical health. The study seeks to demonstrate how various religious and philosophical traditions recognize this interconnection and propose paths toward harmony between faith, reason, and the body, thereby contributing to a fuller and more meaningful life. The use of multiple methodologies historical, sociological, anthropological, phenomenological, among others enables the researcher to engage with the particularities of each religious context, acknowledging their complexity and avoiding simplistic reductions of each phenomenon. A sophisticated approach is required to study religion in its complex and multifaceted nature, highlighting the search for a “third way” that seeks to overcome traditional models of explaining religion. In this sense, Religious Studies emerges as a methodological approach that contributes to the integral well-being of each person.

This dissertation is the result of my researcher's interest in understanding the reception of young students belonging to Afro-Brazilian religions in public schools. It led to a theoretical and practical investigation into the relationship between the acceptance or rejection of these religious traditions, which have been historically violated through demonization and the exotification of their rituals, and their connection to religious racism. The research was conducted with ten (10) eighth-grade students from the metropolitan region of Recife/PE through open-ended questionnaires, written in accessible language and applied both in the classroom and in a domestic setting, with signed authorization from parents and responsible teachers. Analyzing the students' responses, I noticed that, despite the acceptance of these religious traditions in the studied educational institutions, there is still significant resistance to interreligious dialogue. From the perspective of religious studies, I understand that education for plurality allows for an encounter with the subjectivity of the other, fostering an interaction between different levels of reality and leading individuals toward a transreligious awareness. Although Religious Education is not offered in any of the investigated schools, I observed that students who have access to dialogue with different beliefs in their social context develop an awareness rooted in respect. By analyzing the students' voices, I concluded that this research highlights the need for Religious Education that ensures respect and religious freedom, without proselytism, and that is taught by scholars of religion.

This research uses a qualitative approach, with a descriptive and explanatory nature, and is based on documentary analysis that generated critical analyses in order to obtain a better understanding of the phenomenon under study. Having as a corpus the historical testimonies of people who experienced the pastorship of Dom José Freire de Oliveira Neto, this thesis research has the general objective of recovering the historical memory of the aforementioned Pastor based on interviews and testimonies of some people published in local newspapers (when the death of the Bishop Emeritus of Mossoró was reported), between January 10 and 12, 2012. To this end, this work is developed with the guiding methodology called Content Analysis, by Laurence Bardin, aimed at analyzing the data obtained. Among the Content Analysis techniques conceived by the author, Categorical Analysis is the one that interests this research. Considering the reports of the interviewees, data were obtained that, in comparison with the theoretical framework, lent themselves to the research problem. In pursuit of the proposed objective, data collection was carried out through semi-structured interviews with 24 people, including family members, lay people, nuns and priests. Drawing on the study of collective memory, undertaken by Halbwachs (2006), and other theorists who contributed to the development of this research, such as Bosi (1994), Bosi (2003), Cavalcanti (1992), Matos (2002), Matos (2011), Hoornaert (1984), Boff (1990), Boff (1994), Rossi (2010) remembering the figure of Dom José Freire consisted of a process of remembering a historical subject who marked the history of the Diocese of Mossoró itself, whose evocation of the memories of the interviewees, or of the people who spoke out in some local newspaper reports, supported the construction of the historical memory of the memorable Pastor. In addition to the data from the historical reports obtained, the historical collection presented in this thesis proved to be relevant for preserving the memory and legacy of Dom José Freire, as the memories evoked by the interviewees proved to be incisive for the clarity of the remembered past, broadening horizons for a better understanding of individual memories that, intertwined with collective memory, provided support for the constitution of Dom Freire's historical memory.

This thesis explores the complex relationship between death, its various phases and the development of spiritual intelligence, with an emphasis on how these aspects influence the human experience of finitude. The research investigates the fear of death and the strategies for denying it over time, highlighting the cultural and social transformations that have shaped the way societies deal with the end of life. It also examines the role of rituals, ceremonies and festivals related to death, such as funerals and periods of mourning, in the process of coping with loss. Spiritual intelligence is approached as a fundamental resource to help the individual deal with death more serenely, offering a sense of purpose and a deeper understanding of finitude. The thesis proposes a holistic view that integrates emotional, spiritual and cultural aspects, emphasizing the importance of developing practices that can reduce the fear of death, providing a more compassionate and meaningful approach to the process of dying and bereavement.

This thesis aims to answer the moral motivations that lead Protestant families in the United States and Brazil to adopt homeschooling. The path to a possible answer begins with an analysis of the origins of Protestant homeschooling in the United States (Chapter 1) and its reception by Brazilian Protestants (Chapter 2). It is demonstrated that the roots of Protestant homeschooling in the United States are deeply linked to 20th-century Protestant fundamentalism and the idea of a “culture war” (a conservative reaction, including Christians and right-wing politicians, against public schools). A central figure in this movement was the fundamentalist pastor Rousas John Rushdoony, founder of dominion theology, who argued that education is the exclusive responsibility of parents, given by God, and that the State should not interfere. His critique of public education was fundamentally theological, based on the presuppositionalism of Cornelius Van Til. Rushdoony was influential in the legalization of homeschooling in several American states. Regarding the reception by Protestants in Brazil, the thesis addresses the reception in two senses: ideological and legal. The ideological reception is marked by the incorporation of the rhetoric of the American culture war, influenced by missionaries from the USA, social media, promoters such as Olavo de Carvalho, and publishers who translated works such as Rushdoony's into Portuguese. The right-wing political lobby in Brazil also promoted the homeschooling agenda. The legal reception in Brazil shows that homeschooling has no legal provision and was considered unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in 2018. However, the analysis of specific legal cases in Brazil identifies traces of the American culture war and moral and religious motivations in the arguments defended by parents. The thesis also presents a historical counterargument to the claim that homeschooling has always been the method of Christian education. Contrary to this thesis, the research indicates that Christians in ancient times attended pagan public schools and, in the Middle Ages, parochial or episcopal schools linked to the church. Martin Luther, a central figure in the Protestant Reformation, explicitly advocated the creation and maintenance of state-funded public schools and mandatory attendance. Thus, the thesis suggests that homeschooling is a recent innovation in American Protestantism and not a historical practice of Christianity (Chapter 3). Finally, the thesis uses social psychologist Jonathan Haidt’s Moral Foundations Theory (MFT) to explain the moral reasons why Protestant families choose to homeschool (Chapter 4). A survey of Protestant homeschooling families in Brazil revealed that the motivations of homeschoolers are predominantly religious, moral, and ideological (more than 90%), with 100% of the families interviewed identifying with the political right. In conclusion, the results of the research demonstrate that the reception of homeschooling by Protestants in Brazil strongly reflects its ideological and motivational origins in the United States, rooted in Protestant fundamentalism, dominion theology, and culture war rhetoric. Since this is a bibliographical study, primary and secondary works on the subject of the research were used. In addition, the research used a pre-prepared and anonymous questionnaire, aiming to protect the identity of the practitioners, given the unregulated status of the practice in the country.

This dissertation investigates the identity and sense of belonging of the Bnei Anousim living in the rural region of Caruaru, Pernambuco. The Bnei Anousim are descendants of New Christians who, throughout history, have preserved, in a veiled manner, elements of the Jewish tradition in their culture and daily practices. The study analyzes the anthropological, historical and social context that shapes the existence of these communities and how the remnants of crypto-Jewish practices remain alive in their customs and religious experiences. The objective of this dissertation is to explore the identity and sense of belonging among the Bnei Anousim of the rural region of Caruaru, shedding light on the historical, cultural and religious factors that influenced the formation of these communities. The research seeks to understand how these descendants of New Christians have maintained aspects of their Jewish ancestry and how these elements are still recognized and resignified in their daily lives. Regarding the methodology used, the data presented were collected through bibliographic research in books, specialized magazines and audiovisual materials, such as photographs, films and videos. These resources made it possible to trace the historical movement of the Bnei Anousim throughout the state of Pernambuco and identify characteristics that mark these communities. In addition, a questionnaire prepared by Rabbi Abraham Deleon-Cohen, of the Rabbi At Abarbanel Foundation, based in Miami, United States, was used. This questionnaire, administered in 2017, served as a basis for identifying a group of Bnei Anousim established in Pernambuco. The documentary research also included analyses in the archives of the Torre do Tombo, in Portugal (online), and surveys in local synagogues, such as the Beit Chabad Synagogue, the Israelite Center of Pernambuco and the Martins Júnior Synagogue, in addition to records found in Jewish cemeteries of the Jewish Community of Pernambuco. The questionnaire was administered to twenty families from Pernambuco through semi-structured interviews in face-to-face focus groups, allowing the identification of patterns of behavior and crypto-Jewish practices. The results reveal that the communities investigated maintain cultural and religious aspects linked to crypto-Judaism, evidencing a historical continuity of Jewish identity even in the face of adversity. The research confirms that emblematic elements of Jewish tradition are still present in the daily lives of these families, strengthening their identity and sense of belonging. Thus, the study contributes to the understanding of the social and cultural dynamics that permeate the history of the Bnei Anousim in Pernambuco and their relationship with Jewish tradition.

This research investigated the relationship between teacher training and the construction of pedagogical practices for Religious Education (RE) based on the professional work of pedagogues who have taught this curricular component in the Early Years of Elementary School at the Maria do Carmo Gonçalves Municipal School of Early Childhood and Elementary Education, located in the city of Bom Jesus, Alto Sertão region of Paraíba. Throughout the chapters, the challenges faced by these teachers were addressed, due to the tensions between a Catholic tradition with a colonial profile and the current demands for a free, plural and democratic exercise of religiosity in our country. To this end, RE was considered a sensitive and complex curricular component, especially in the Early Years of Elementary School, in which teachers with a degree in Pedagogy teach RE together with other core components. In theoretical terms, the concepts of field and habitus formulated by the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu (1983; 1994; 1999; 2000; 2001; 2007) were used, systematized in the idea of teacher habitus, from which this professional teaching field was analyzed, in dialogue with studies of Religious Sciences. The methodology used was qualitative research, using the descriptive method, complemented by a bibliographical research on RE. In addition, interviews were conducted with five pedagogues who teach classes in the Initial Years of Elementary School at the aforementioned school. It is concluded that the process of initial and continued training of these pedagogues has not given the necessary attention to Religious Education, resulting in pedagogical practices that lack more contemporary and effective approaches to RE in the Initial Years of Elementary School.

The problem of happiness has always been a question of philosophical doubts for human beings, as subjects of relationships with themselves, with others and with the universe. For, from the ancient Greeks to the current social context, we realize that this issue is still present in our daily lives. However, when we address the issue of the happiness of the contemporary subject, we are faced with situations that imply more elaborate and more detailed reflections, as it is a theme that extends over time and has been demonstrating structural changes in society, consequently in the daily life of contemporary subjects. For the question of happiness as a happy way of life, it is necessary to understand the context in which this contemporary subject is found. Because, in our analyses, he sees himself in a universe of experiences of seduction and desires that make him understand that he is happy, however, these experiences do not satisfy him and he continues to seek an illusory happiness. And for that, in the era of emptiness, where seduction and the ego are increasingly valued, this contentment does not account for the desire for a happy life, even because it is seductive, charming, but the existential emptiness remains in this subject of relationships fluid and temporary. However, we seek from the philosophy of Plotinus and Saint Augustine to build bridges with regard to happiness. Well, these theories come to demonstrate that the human subject in his transit through earthly existence can reflect on the material values lived and elect questions of a transcendental nature, such as the relationship with the Sacred, allowing to reach happiness. In this way, the theoretical supports in Plotinus and Santo Agostinho allow us subsidies to think about the search for happiness in the relationship with the Sacred and from this understanding the contemporary subject can resignify for a new beginning, as a happy way of life.

This research set out to understand the context of the arrival of the Salesians in Brazil at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century and the position of the Salesians at the end of the power of priests, based on sociologist Pierre Bourdieu's concept of symbolic power, as well as to understand the impact of the work of the Salesian Congregation on its arrival in the north-east of Brazil and on the professionalization of young Pernambucans in the city of Recife between 1882 and 1920. It also situates the transition from the 19th to the 20th century, which corresponds to the description of the background to the arrival of the Salesians. It analyzed the Salesians as agents of the repositioning of the new moment in the Church: the end of the power of priests and the beginning of Romanization, thinking about this issue from the point of view of a "spirituality of work". The research was qualitative and documental, in which the bibliography was used as an object of analysis, from primary sources such as newspapers, printed material published in the period studied, developed on the basis of elaborate material, consisting mainly of books and scientific articles, of a qualitative nature based on the nature of the data collected, the extent of the sample, the research instruments and the theoretical assumptions that guided the investigation.

This thesis set out to investigate and discuss how images - perception and visual devices - are used in the development and dissemination of Pentecostal eschatology as a way of affirming religious identity among members of the Assembly of God of Paraíba, João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil. Based on this proposal, this study aimed to demonstrate that the use of visual devices in the Assembly of God of Paraíba plays an important role in the consolidation of eschatology among Assembly members. Since image supports have been an important means of consolidating religious imagery over time, this thesis presented the role of visual culture in the Pentecostal Evangelicalism of the Assemblies of God as its central research problem, specifically using the image material found on eschatology. In this way, it examined the use of symbols, metaphors and visual narratives in the communication of this event, and how visual devices influence the construction of this imaginary by the Assemblies. The object of the research was the use of visual devices by the Assembly of God of Paraíba, shaping an eschatological imaginary among the members of this religious denomination. From a cultural-historical perspective, this work used the analytical model proposed by historian Erwin Panofsky as a theoretical support for the iconological analysis of Pentecostal visual culture, considering both the visual elements and the cultural and historical aspects of the images. In this sense, the work shows that imagery is an important part of the evangelizing strategy of Pentecostals, particularly in the Assemblies of God, configuring a specific visual culture; the imagery used is generally not produced nationally, but imported, and therefore undergoes a process of reception according to the interests of the Pentecostal evangelizing project; the eschatological imagery is preponderant in these visual devices and, read iconologically, they emphasize the relationship between the priorities of Pentecostal leaders and the socio-historical contexts of Brazilian social formation.

The research aimed to understand religion in its relationship with the public space, especially in Youth and Adult Education (EJA), in order to understand how secular and religious discourses coexist in the educational environment. In this way, the thesis was proven that it is possible to have religion and be secular and that the school is a privileged institution for mediation between secular and religious discourses. Subsequently, the experiences of this mediation in and through pedagogical practice were evaluated and the results were confirmed, and specific social practices, in interaction and dialogue with other specific social practices, resulted in the formation of subjects capable of participating in peacemaking efforts and constructive dialogues between non-believers and believers. The methodology, a qualitative paradigm, was developed through document analysis, observation and semi-structured interviews with teachers, administrators and students. The research was conducted in a school of the Municipal Education Network of Jaboatão dos Guararapes (PE/BR), located on the urban periphery, in an occupied area. Next, we present the main theoretical frameworks that support our study, our research intentions and the results that arise from them. Initially, our incursions were aimed at identifying various conceptions of secularism, linked to historical processes and their philosophical, sociological, legal and pedagogical contours, in order to approach the conceptions of collaborative secularism and Brazilian secularism. From now on, we highlight some theoretical aspects, such as the concept of habitus and the notions of state, field, capital and agent, which were converted into theoretical categories, thus, they were constructed as driving ideas to clarify our research objectives. Next, we move on to discourse theory from the perspective of Laclau and Mouffe, thus searching for a theory for data analysis. In view of this, we proceeded to reflect on the future of religion in contemporary times in a scenario of religious mutations and displacements, to better understand the meanings of the transitions between the faithful and the pilgrim, from the faithful to the half-faithful, from the religious to the spiritualized, in the context of religions remade from pre-established religions. Continuing, we sought to clarify the conceptions related to human rights, in their universalist, relativist and critical conceptions, considered as necessary to the understanding of Human Rights Education (HRE), considering its characteristics and theoretical affiliations, among them, with critical pedagogies. We also highlight EJA, its historical aspects and the context of Juvenilization of its students, to better understand the meanings and negotiations of meanings that shape secularism in pedagogical practice. Furthermore, based on empirical research and triangulation of data with the theoretical options adopted, we present the confirmation of our thesis and the possible contributions to the understanding of the relationship between State and religion and how it is projected in the educational field. Therefore, it was found that non-believers and believers of different religions and denominations coexist in the school. However, religions of African origin are invisible, their followers are secretive, discreet, very reserved, feel excluded from their religious affiliations and do not identify themselves, do not assume themselves, for fear of discrimination and prejudice. Therefore, for these subjects, the school is not secular. Therefore, we conclude that various conceptions of secularism coexist in it and that inter-religious dialogue is encouraged among religious denominations of Christian origin, which, in the context of Brazilian secularism, we qualify as incomplete or half-secularism. Finally, we conclude that, in the school environment, the idea that having a religion means being a Catholic or Evangelical Christian has no empirical support.

Hermetic and cruel positions exposed in LGBTphobic speeches given on the internet by religious leaders who endorse situations of great suffering for non-heteronormative people and groups; instigating people who belong to fundamentalist families to oppress their loved ones within their homes, drunk by an exclusionary, prejudiced and distorted vision of the good news of the practice of love, recommended by Jesus Christ, in the midst of social confinement as a result of health standards for control Covid-19 pandemic, and overwhelmed by hate speech on social media, gained exorbitant followers, who share the same stance. This toxicity has had a great impact on the increase in Christian religious fundamentalisms that demonize and reject everything that is contrary to their dogmas, increasing the mental suffering of those they subjugate and mediocriizing the aggregating stance that religious institutions should have, in environments of subjugation of the be deviant. The present study leads us to reflect on how Brazil achieved the title of country with the highest levels of anxiety in the world; at the same time that, according to the latest IBGE census, we have a country with a greater number of churches than schools. In the same vein, Brazil is going against the grain of the world with the increase in the number of suicide cases among adolescents and young people, and, for the 14th time in a row, it leads the ranking of countries that take the most lives of LGBTQIA+ people around the world. It is necessary to state that none of this is a mere coincidence. The internet provided a favorable environment to expand hate speech from conservative and fundamentalist positions in families, under the Nazi motto of “God, country and family”, unifying three of the main social institutions, equipping ideologies, rejecting diversities and differences such as part of a project to perpetuate power. Even in an adverse scenario, there is resistance, mobilizations of collectives for diversity. A significant part of civil society, especially progressive churches, remains firm in the fight to guarantee the existence and survival of plurality, respect and love, echoing the saying in the composition by Milton Nascimento and Caetano Veloso: “any form of love is worth Too bad, any form of love is worth loving. ”

“Entre Jesus, Apolo e Obatalá”: o hibridismo transcontinental do Vale do amanhecer e as relações de poder.
(Universidade Católica de Pernambuco, 2024-09-16) Silva, Roberto Calabria Guimarães da; Raimundo, Valdenice José; Campos, Zuleica Dantas Pereira; Aragão, Gilbraz de Souza; Santos, James Washington Alves dos; Peixoto, José Adelson Lopes
This research had as its object of study to analyze the power relations, which at an institutional level, ranging from the command of work to the national/international command of religion, at a spiritual level organizes the hierarchy between men and women, present in the Vale do Amanhecer, through the perception of mediums. In order to respond to the problem presented by the object, the following objective was formulated: to investigate the religious practices of the Vale do Amanhecer, based on the analysis of its history, associating it with the story of Tia Neiva and relating it to transcontinental hybridism. This analysis will have as categories of analysis the transcontinental hybridism and the power relations. The choice for transcontinental hybridism occurred because it was not possible, in our analysis, to dialogue with the syncretism category, since the pantheon of the Valley forms a mosaic with entities from various faiths and continents such as Candomblé, Umbanda, Christianity, Kardecism, religions of Ancient Greece and Egypt, Buddhism and ufology entities as elements of the book Exilados de Capela, involving spiritual entities from religions of four continents that were incorporated into the Vale do Amanhecer, working in order and synchrony, without the mirroring of the entities, as was imposed on religions of African origin, in which an Orixá represented a Saint, as a way for the enslaved to be able to worship their faith without being repressed by their masters. To collect the data, forms with specific questions about the topic were sent, and the responses were analyzed using a quantitative and qualitative approach, in which the percentages, individual analysis, and the combined responses made it possible to understand the mediums' view of how they observe the hierarchy, defined by power relations, in a hybrid and transcontinental community. This research also focused on analyzing the place that women occupy in the hierarchy of the Valley. The research showed that most women perceived a devaluation of the place occupied by the female public, which leads to a contradiction, since the religion was created by Tia Neiva, who after her death was elevated to one of the main spiritual entities of the Vale do Amanhecer. This study will contribute to a better understanding of the relationships that are established in the Valley, as well as give visibility to the religious and spiritual practices experienced in the Vale do Amanhecer. The thesis is based on the dialogue between the categories of hybridism, taking as a basis Cancline (1997), a genre in which Nunes's (1985) thinking fits into the issue of women's protagonism in the Valley, and finally, multiculturalism based on the concepts of Touraine (1997). The thesis proposes to describe the Vale do Amanhecer in its historical context and in its relations with the religions that hybridize with it, emphasizing Catholicism, Kardecism and Umbanda, which exert a strong influence, both in the rituals and in the mediums and patients who attend.

The analysis of Christian counseling among evangelicals demands a detailed scientific study, as this tool has been used for a long time by so-called Protestant churches, especially those considered historical, originating from the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century, such as the Presbyterian Church of Brazil, the Congregational Church and Baptist Church. The interaction between religion and emotional health to support and cope with health problems that involve the individual's entire socio-family context was the starting point for understanding how, when and why counseling emerged. Based on this, the object of investigation is the understanding that emotional problems require a deeper analysis of their causes. This is because factors such as trauma, dysfunctional relationships and spiritual issues can contribute to the emergence of these difficulties, affecting not only the individual, but also the sociofamily dynamics. Evangelical churches present a guidance approach called Christian counseling. She emphasizes the importance of prayer, reading the Scriptures and communing with God as some of the necessary elements in the process of healing and restoration, in addition to valuing the wisdom and guidance of church leaders, who often act as moral and spiritual counselors. Counseling experiences within the evangelical tradition demonstrate the importance of the relationship of trust between the counselor and the counselee, as well as what is necessary to discuss personal problems that involve reactions in their lives, in their actions and in their emotions. The overall objective of this research is to understand how these counselors are trained or seek training that enables them to listen attentively, to offer spiritual support, guidance and encouragement in the search for healing. The specific objectives aim to: initiate an investigation into the application of Christian counseling and what already exists scientifically; and measure the results of this counseling, using a methodology already applied in the United States of America, the Duck questionnaire adapted to the current condition of churches in the metropolitan region of Recife, pointing out the interaction of religion with the emotional health of people in Brazil. Based on this information, the research aims to understand and present complex and dynamic causes behind emotional problems, in addition to finding some answers to classify Christian counseling from evangelical churches as a possible support community capable of producing some type of help involving emotional healing of people.

Popular Bible Reading (LPB), as carried out by the Center for Biblical Studies (CEBI), is an educational practice that contributes to the formation of critical consciousness. The veracity of this hypothesis will be demonstrated in our work based on the experience lived in the Diocese of Mossoró of the Roman Catholic Church in the 80s and 90s of the 20th century. We start with a historical review, remembering the birth of CEBI in partnership and communion with other experiences of liberating education and action that emerged in Brazil from the 1960s onwards and contributed to the formation of several popular movements. Along the way, the close relationship between popular reading of the Bible and Popular Education stands out, based on their mutual influences, differentiations and inspirations in the See, Judge and Act method. As an educational and mystical process, Popular Reading of the Bible generated adherences and transformations in the understanding of the world and in the political and professional options of several people who built the LPB in the Diocese of Mossoró, the main one was the creation of a new critical consciousness, as will be demonstrated from the subjects’ statements. This is a revolutionary experience that can illuminate the current Brazilian religious situation marked by polarization and fundamentalism, as the Popular Reading of the Bible awakens to action in reality and a commitment to the impoverished as an ethical requirement of faith in Jesus. Religion always has a political presence in society, whether revolutionary or conservative. The way we read the world and the Word of God will define our options.

As chamas da fé: a ação da Liga Católica contra o protestantismo no campo religioso recifense (1902-1910).

The Brazil of the 19th century went through several changes, and religion was one of the areas that was notably altered. The Catholic institution was the only religious guide in the socio-political formation of the Portuguese colony, thus generating a great impasse with the arrival of other Christian churches in the country, thanks to the small liberations of the 1824 Constitution. When the Republic coup occurred in 1889, and consequently in January 1890, the secular state was officially established in article 119-A. The legal freedom given to religions led to a more emphatic reaction from the Brazilian episcopate, already imbued with the First Vatican Council (1869-70) and subsequent papal encyclicals. A Catholic reaction was established, with the publication of pastoral letters and diocesan Catholic congresses. These actions targeted various areas, such as the press, education, festivals, missions, and the fight against Protestantism. This work is dedicated to studying the Catholic reaction in the capital of Pernambuco at the beginning of the 20th century, after the Pernambuco Catholic Congress of 1902. Pernambuco is the only state in the country that organizes an official body against Protestantism, named "League against Protestantism," founded in September of the same year, based at Our Lady of Penha Church in the São José neighborhood of Recife. The League regularly published in the main circulating newspapers of Recife, especially in A Província: órgão do Partido Liberal. The publications addressed key pillars of the Catholic faith to reach believers and shield them from Protestant heresies. The league gained prominence in its period for its manifestation of its fight through burning Protestant Bibles inciting debates about religious limits and tolerance. We will use sociologist Pierre Bourdieu's view on methods for maintaining the Roman Church and the struggle for dominance in the religious field in Recife, understanding the League both as an action and as a reaction to the religious and ideological conjecture of that time.
